Key Telugu Wedding Rituals Explained

Understanding the significance of each ritual helps you plan timings and communicate with your pandit and photographer.

Nischitartham (Engagement)

3โ€“6 months before

Official engagement ceremony where families exchange gifts. Horoscopes are matched and muhurtham is fixed.

Ganesh Pooja

Morning of wedding

Prayer to Lord Ganesha for blessings and removal of obstacles. Performed by both families separately.

Naandi

Day before or wedding morning

Ancestral blessing ceremony performed by the pandit to invoke blessings of forefathers.

Kashi Yatra

Muhurtham day

Groom pretends to leave for Kashi (Varanasi) to become a sage; bride's father convinces him to stay and marry.

Mangalyadharanam

Muhurtham time

The central ritual โ€” groom ties the mangalsutra (sacred thread) around the bride's neck at the auspicious muhurtham time.

Saptapadi

During ceremony

The couple takes seven steps around the sacred fire (homa), each step representing a sacred vow for their life together.

Talambralu

Post-mangalyadharanam

Bride and groom shower each other with rice and kumkuma while seated on the stage โ€” a joyful, photogenic ritual.

5 Things Most Couples Forget

1

Confirm generator capacity โ€” not just "we have a generator" but actual KVA rating vs your AC and lighting needs

2

Book a family member as day-of coordinator who has all vendor contacts and is NOT in the wedding party

3

Brief photographer on specific family members and rituals they must capture โ€” they can't guess

4

Arrange water bottles and light snacks for vendors working 6โ€“8 hour shifts โ€” it improves their work quality significantly

5

Have a printed copy of the muhurtham time and all ritual timings for every family coordinator
